エコエティカという名前と問題意識の出発点

エコエティカとは、「人類の生息圏の規模で考える倫理」ということで、科学技術の連関から成る社会という新しい環境の中で、人間の直面するさまざまな新しい問題を含めて、人間の生き方を考えなおそうとする新しい哲学の一部門です。（p17)

倫理は従来、非常に重要な基本的な問題については宗教に支えられていましたが、宗教全体がこの高度技術社会の中で社会的勢力を失ってくるという傾向もあり、さらに人間一般の行動が機械に規制されていけばすむという状況が日常がしていますので、このままでゆくと倫理は空名になる恐れもあります。そうなると、倫理なき人間社会ができてしまいます。それでは道のない集まりになります。したがってエコロジカルな人間の変化にあたって、今までのエティカとはちがって、それを十分に意識したエティカを考えなければなるまいというわけで、わざわざ「エコエティカ eco-ethica」という名前をつけた次第です。（p24-25)

Eco-ethica refers to an ethics that encompasses our human habitat. It is one branch of an emerging philosophy aimed at rethinking how we live, including the various new issues facing the human race today, when society consists of a technology-mediated environment.

In the past ethics was backed by religion on truly crucial fundamental issues, but in today's highly technological society there is a tendency for religions as a whole to lose their social clout, and it has become common for the behaviour of people in general to be simply regulated by machines. If things continue like this, ethics runs the risk of turning into mere platitudes with no substance. The result would be a society devoid of ethical principles, an assemblage of individuals who had lost their way. There is a need to formulate an ethics that, unlike conventional ethica, is fully cognizant of the ecological changes facing humankind, which is why I came up with the term eco-ethica.
